Herrin is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Granite City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that would become Herrin was first settled by the Kaskaskia people in 1795. They were followed by the Potawatomi people in 1805 and the Menominee people in 1827. By 1840, all of these groups had moved out of the area and what would eventually become Herrin was founded as a townsite by Captain John Atherton on July 20, 1841. It was named for his wife, Elizabeth Atherton (1797-1871). In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer died at Fort Dearborn near Herrin and is buried there with his regiment's officer corps. The fort served as an early training ground for American cavalry units during World War I and II. The communities of Winnetka and Prospect Heights began to form in the early 1900s as farmers tried to make a living off of their land while still keeping close ties to their home country. In 1916, Herrin became one of twelve towns established within Cook County through legislation known as "Herrinization." This act authorized counties to create municipal governments with limited powers and allowed for more self-government within rural areas than had been possible before. Herrin's growth can be credited partially with its annexation by Park Ridge in 1949; Park Ridge represented much larger city goals for suburban development that did not want anything to do with what they saw as an underdeveloped community outside their boundaries. On September 5th, 1957 a tornado struck central Illinois leaving over 60 homes destroyed or damaged including many herrins who lost everything they owned or used in their everyday lives such as clotheslines from windowsills to ovens/stoves: some never got back up again due to lack of insurance or rebuild materials available after this natural disaster which also took human life(s) including two members of the Atherton family). Herrin is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to explore the area now known as Herrin was French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1673. He named it Jérôme-les-Monts and traveled northward for about three weeks before returning southward. In 1793, Nicholas Raye explored the area and named it after his friend and mentor, Baron de Herrin. In 1814, Amos Kendall built a cabin on a bluff overlooking Herrin creek. He started trading goods with Native Americans and later became one of the first white men to clear land in what is now Cook County. In 1836, John Stephenson founded Stephenson's Store hereabouts after leaving his fortune in Ohio to start an agricultural store there. At this time many people lived near by on bluffs or natural ridges which afforded them good views of all around them while they hunted game or fished for trout or shellfish from waters below In 1854, General George Armstrong Custer Entered Illinois through this locality during his journey from Missouri to Red Cloud Agency (now North Dakota) with 5(5) Buffalo Soldiers under command On July 12th that year he was killed near Fort Dearborn (later Chicago). His body still remains buried at Hollywood Hills Cemetery
