On July 4th 1886 local residents helped to load wagons with supplies destined for an insurrectionary force called "The Hard Times Club" which planned to march on Springfield to demand better working conditions there. When they reached the town limits they were met with police forces loyal to Mayor Nicholas Murray who had control over township finances and prohibited them from entering or leaving town limits without his approval. A group of about 20 men decided to stage a daring escape by walking into village square instead; however this plan was foiled by Murray's police officers who pursued them across community fields until they finally surrendered at Union Station (now Forest Park). After years of decline and annexation by neighboring townships due primarily to political considerations rather than economic necessity (the increasing population in larger communities made it hard for smaller towns to maintain their own schools and infrastructure), Herrin experienced its most significant growth during World War II when many military families moved here because it became available as a munitions plant or research center near Rockford IL. After the war ended many residents left for similar reasons although some have returned since then including Ken Wexler who served as mayor from 2003-2011 and current City Councilmember Rahm Emanuel’s former Chief operating Officer before that position led Emanuel’s successful campaign for mayor in 2011
