Herrin is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,830 at the 2000 census. Herrin is located on the right bank of the Kankakee River. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first residents of Herrin were German immigrants who moved there from Bavaria in 1847. The town was founded by John Wirth and James Ritchie in 1853 as a farmstead on a tract of land purchased from David Elliott by Wirth's father-in-law, John Sargent. In 1854, the village was incorporated; it had no school until 1861 when an addition to the schoolhouse provided classrooms and boys' athletics for girls. In 1898, Herrin merged with neighboring White Settlement to form White Settlement Village; however, this merger did not take effect until 1902 because White Settlement Village had already been organized as an independent municipality earlier that year. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of 2000, there were 1,830 people residing in Herrin village: 910 men (50% male), 830 women (50% female), and 5 children under age 18 (3%). Of these 1,830 individuals 290 lived in buildings used for residential purposes only - 221 single family homes (88% occupied) and 269 apartments/condos (12%. There are also 10 businesses which have 100 or more employees: two banks (oneanchor business), two health clinics/clinics (seven percent occupancy), one restaurant/bars/cafes(six percent occupancy), one trucking company which services four local customers per day(three percent occupancy). Of these 10 businesses three serve primarily agricultural products: five farmers markets offer fresh produce from local growers weekly; six grocery stores offer processed foods such as convenience stores items such as gasoline station snacks and soft drinks; one dairy store offers milk products such as cheese
Herrin was founded in 1859 by John Herrin and his wife, Harriet. In 1870, the town of Herrin was organized and named after Herrin. The population grew steadily until 1924 when it peaked at over 1,200 people. After that, the population slowly declined until it reached its current level of around 100 people in 2000.
