The Herrin Manufacturing Company was founded in 1881 by German immigrants, Johann and Clara Herrin. The company made tools and other products for the agricultural, civil, and construction industries. The company produced its first product, a hand-held saw, in 1882. In 1925, the Herrin Manufacturing Company merged with the American Saw Works Corporation to form the American Saw Works Corporation/Herrin Manufacturing Company.
Herrin, Illinois is a small town in the eastern part of the state of Illinois. It is located on the banks of the river Kankakee. The population was 1,890 at the 2000 census. The Herrin community was founded in 1868 by farmers from Greendale Township, Ontario County, Indiana. The first post office in Herrin was called Hesselman and opened in 1870. In 1875, it was renamed after General James Fenton Herrin who fought during the American Civil War. The first store in Herrin was built near where current-day State Road 509 meets Kankakee River. Herrin is located about 15 minutes east of downtown Chicago and 5 minutes west of Rockford, making it one of the shortest towns in Illinois by population size. According to the 2010 census, its population has decreased by 7 percent since 2000 while its median household income has increased by 3%. Its unemployment rate is 2%. In addition to agriculture and manufacturing, primary industries include construction services and retail trade. There are two elementary schools (Herrington Elementary School and Griggs Middle School) as well as a high school (Laramie High School). A park with baseball diamonds and soccer fields lies adjacent to downtown Herrin which also includes a grocery store/cafeteria complex known as "The Crickets".

In 1891, Swiss inventor Johann Rudolph von Lengerke designed a new type of tool called a lanyard Hitch that could be attached to any sturdy object (such as trees). This invention made it possible for people to carry multiple tools with them on their person without having to worry about losing them or damaging them. Herrin, Illinois is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,599 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first settlement in Herrin was made on October 8, 1827 by John Herrin and his brother David Herrin. They were surveyors for the Western Land Company. In 1830 they erected a cabin on the east side of Prairie Creek. A few years later they laid out a town on this site and named it after their father-in-law, Reuben Herrin. In 1835–36 William Houlgrave built a sawmill and grist mill at present day Creston Road and Prairie Creek Boulevard. These mills produced lumber for buildings and other purposes until about 1860 when railroads came to town and converted them to textile mills. The last mill closed in 1930. On November 30, 1853 voters approved incorporation of what was then known as "Herrin" into the new city of Springfield; however, no action followed because no one had taken up the offer to form an organization to carry out this incorporation. On December 3rd evidence surfaced that there existed an organization called "the Citizens' Conference" which intended to organize citizens into business associations to improve their quality of life within Springfield's limits; however this group did not take any action until too late due diligence had been expended by members who already had organizations functioning within Springfield proper (e.g., churches) with similar goals/objectives without being directly annexed by "Herrin". It should be noted that while much has changed since then – with advances in transportation technology allowing more people access to resources closer by – some elements have remained constant such as Name Changes (euphemisms like "Herrin", rather than actual places name), lack of representation or engagement from government officials (especially Mayor George Wessels) during important developmental period leading up to Cityhood referendum in 1978 which lost narrowly against non-partisan campaign promises from incumbent mayor Art Smithson; continuing control from current City Councilmember Danita Cephus – currently serving her third consecutive terms representing District 2 outside of Springfield’s borders; recent planning efforts spearheaded by current City Manager Jeff Boehm that focus on revitalizing downtown areas adjacent thereto including adjoining properties owned by former Mayor Art Smithson’s wife Linda Lunsford yielding mixed results so far despite investment totaling almost $20M over several years including demolition/construction of two historic structures now used as office space within district boundaries resulting in enhancement or stabilization of various assets along Center Street corridor - all indicative once again that while much has changed since 1978 when "Herrin" became part of Springfield Township under then Township trustee Herb Wells…………………..lessons still need learned
Herrin was founded in 1847 by John Herrin, a German immigrant. The town grew quickly after the arrival of settlers, and by 1865 it had a population of over 100 people. In the early years of the 20th century, Herrin was an important center for agricultural production and transportation. In 1915, the town was renamed to honor American General John J. Pershing.
