In 1951 Herrin became part of Illinois when it gained statehood from Missouri; however, it retained its own government until 1978 when it merged with neighbouring village of La Grange into one municipality. Today Herrin is known for its small-town atmosphere and rich history dating back to both before European settlement arrived and during latter days of independent Kane County when many pioneers made their mark including David Heald (1815-1909), George Stephenson (1792-1867), Julius Rosenwald (1863-1937) and others who have left lasting legacies such as Herb Kleinman (1920-2009).
