In 1911, Lila Belle Hill founded the Ladies Home Journal in Herrin, one of the earliest women's publications in America. She served as its editor from 1912 to 1916 and again from 1920 to 1923. In 1929, Herrin had its first schoolhouse established when Ethel Sayers donated land for an addition to her home on Main Street. The school continued until 1942 when it merged with nearby Harperville School District No. 2 to form Harperville-Herrin Township High School District No. 2 (later Harperville-Herrin Union High School).
