Firearms continued to play an important role in society through the 20th century but handgun use slowly decreased due to advances in technology and greater firepower available through handguns alone

The original settlers were farmers who farming in what is now eastern Illinois. Over time, they started growing apples and other crops which allowed them to build up their business over time. In 1976, the current mayor of Herrin was elected and he took office representing all residents of the town including Germans as well as Americans. Today, there are many businesses in Herrin that contribute to its economy such as agribusinesses, grocery stores, restaurants and taverns. Additionally, there are several schools located in the town which provide education for children from pre-kindergarten through high school graduation; making it one of the most diverse communities in central Illinois.

Herrin is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1856 by German immigrants who arrived in 1848 from Hesse-Darmstadt. In 1880, Herrin became one of the first towns in Illinois to be chartered as an incorporated village. In 1912, Herrin united with neighboring towns of Arlington and Mount Prospect to form a new city called Chicago Heights. The city's boundaries were enlarged by annexation of two other villages: North Park and West Side Road (now Cicero Avenue). In 1922, Herrin merged with nearby village of Addison to become Herrin-Addison platted district No. 2 which included all of McLean County except for parts of Glenview and Streamwood which remained separate municipalities until 1959 when they were annexed into Chicago Heights as well as seven other villages in Mclean County that joined the city during that period: Arlington Heights, Bloomingdale Hills, Bucktown, Crete Terrace Gardens, Elmhurst Gardens/Homes on Michigan Avenue/Lincoln Park South Shore Drive (referred to locally as "the Loop"), Midway Hills/Lake View Terrace (referred to locally as "the Woods"), North Park (referred to locally as "north park" or simply "north", and including Garfield Heights), Orchard Hills (referring to localities north and east of Lake Michigan),Sherman Oaks/Oak Lawns (east side only)and Streamwood Village (west side only). As part of the 1999 merger process between Cook County and DuPage County it was decided that each county would be divided into five regions which would be further subdivided into 50 areas within those regions plus several hundred more scattered throughout the state; these 50 areas would then be divided into 10 wards where council members are elected directly by their constituents instead of being appointed by the mayor based on party lines. Herrin had been proposed for inclusion within this new structure but because its population size did not exceed 100 people it was not implemented. However because its location close to downtown Chicago made it an attractive target for developers interested in expanding businesses there rather than outside neighborhoods it has seen some redevelopment over time such as a shopping center being built on State Street near Lake Michigan just south of Damen Avenue and another large mixed use development being constructed along Wabash Avenue adjacent to McCormick Place Shopping Center near Wacker Drive
