Herrin is a small town in the Kankakee County, Illinois area. It was founded in 1834 by German immigrants who came to the United States as part of the Great Migration. The population of Herrin was 597 at the 2000 census. Herrin is located at (41.866667, -87.966667). According to the 2010 census, it has a total land area of , of which is land and (0.5%) is water. According to tradition, Herrin was named for Hermann von Herrin, an early settler in this area who donated land for a church and cemetery in 1834. In 1892, John Fenton built a white house on what would later be called Hennepin Avenue in Herrin and named it "Fenton's Store". A black family lived there until 1954 when they moved to nearby Pella and started their own grocery store there. The first post office in Herrin opened on October 10, 1835; it served as the town's only postal service until May 1, 1840 when a new post office opened at milepost 5 on Ulysses Road which became known as "Herrin." The original spelling of both "Herrin" and "Fenton's Store" may have been inspired by Jacob Fenton’s older brother Andrew (né Andrew) who had also come over from Germany with his family during the early 1800s. A school building was erected in 1850 but burned down soon after being constructed; it was replaced by a better-quality frame structure that still stands today on North Main Street near West High School: this building served as the town hall from 1865 through 1927 when it was replaced by an even newer facility that still serves as local government headquarters today: this building also housed various other civic services before becoming offices for Pella city officials beginning in 1951: finally starting in 1967 its present name - City Hall - when all other municipal offices were consolidated within one building within city limits. In 1907/08 an addition to north side high school - now west side high school -was made possible through donations from Jocko Burdick Sr., father-in-law of Jameson Burdick who owned many businesses including Hurt Locker supplier JB Welding Corporation adjacent to east side high school across busy 12th street from old high school site across busy 13th street from future home of city hall This two story addition cost $6200 plus materials & labor not included tax increase approved Nov 6 1920 . Original architect unknown but style neoclassical with stone facing . After years without major use adult children took over maintenance then sold furniture used inside & outside extremely limited storage available so most equipment remained inside original architects death caused property taxes increased 3 fold

There are also several educational institutions located within the town including Prairie View A&M University and Central High School.
