Herrin was a small town in the southern Illinois township of Herrin. It was located on the north bank of the Kaskaskia River, about three miles east of downtown Chicago. Fenton as part of an effort to improve shooting opportunities for farmers and others around Herrin. In 1907, A H Heineman set up a sawmill near Herrin that produced gunpowder for airguns and pistols. In 1912, Simeon Poff developed an improved airgun that could be fired from a hand-held device called a "pump" or "piston." This machine allowed shooters to shoot directly into the wind with little precision or accuracy using projectiles made from lead shot or feathers instead of rifle bullets or pellets
Herrin, Illinois is a small town located in the Kankakee County area of southwestern Illinois. The population was 5,872 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Herrin was John Henry Herrin who arrived there in 1836. He and his family were the first white people to reside in what became Herrin Township. Famed General George Armstrong Custer passed through much of this area on his way from Dodge City to Rockford to fight in World War I and several other battles, including the Battle of Little Big Horn. Herrin was known as "the granary of America" for its production of corn and wheat which made it one of the most important towns on the Great Lakes region during that time. At one time, it also produced bacon, eggs, butter, cheese and other items not typically found today near urban areas. In 1907 local businessman J B Dixon opened a grocery store which soon became one of the largest stores in Herrin with over 100 employees. In 1916 Dixon donated land to build a high school which then graduated its first class in 1917. The high school closed in 2002 but has been reborn as an educational center named after him with classes starting fall 2006 semesterformerly known as Dixon Campus High School

The community was founded in 1876 by German immigrants and was named for Hans Herrin, an early settler. The first store in the town was built on the corner of Third Street and Main Street. A post office operated here from 1876 to 1888. In 1886, Herrin had two schools: one for white children and one for black children. In 1922, both schools were closed due to budget cuts and replaced by a junior high school which still operates today. Herrin also has a small museum which tells its history through exhibits and stories told by local residents.
