Ladd opened a bakery on State Street east of village square. In 1895, HONEY COMPANY BAKERY INC., now known as HEMISPHERE Baking Co., Inc., opened on North Avenue east of village square; it remains one of the two largest baking companies in Illinois today with over 230 stores throughout the state! In 1899-1900, COOK COUNTY WELFARE SOCIETY published a handbook for immigrants living in Cook County (now Bloomington) entitled "Practical Guide to Settling In." Hazel Crest is an unincorporated community in McHenry County, Illinois, located east of the village of Hazel Crest on a small stream called the Deerfield River. It was founded in 1871 by J.W. and Mable Hazlewood as a farmstead on a rise overlooking the Deerfield River. The Hazlewoods were young farmers who had come to live in Hazel Crest from nearby Decatur after their father's death in 1859. In 1870, they added land to the Farmstead, including what is now the Village of Hazel Crest. The Hazlewoods sold their ownership of the Farmstead in 1908 to John Dolan, who renamed it Hazel Crest Park and opened it to the public in 1912. The Dolan family operated it until 1978 when it was bought by George Mueller and his wife Betty Mueller-Mueller, who maintained the property as a private park until its sale to Hazel Crest LLC for $5 million in November 2016. Hazel Crest is birthplace of three current U.S. Senators: Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI). The town also contains one other significant historical site: American Legion Post No. 129 which served as headquarters for two years during World War II and was also home to many military personnel stationed there during that time period including General Motors' Buick plant which built Ford cars at that location adjacent to American Legion Post No. 129; this building still stands today and serves as a museum open to the public exhibiting artifacts from that time period
