According to one source, when first settled in 1847 by John Fetterman (a settler) and his family, many residents of nearby fulling mills called this place Haldershus because they believed that Mr. Fetterman had bought land at Heather Ridge which covered most of what is now Hazel Crest. The name stuck and has been used ever since. According to 2000 US Census data, there were 1,711 people living in Hazel Crest who identified as white (92% of all residents). Hispanic or Latino residents accounted for 3% of all households (1 household out of every 10), while African American residents made up 2%. There were no Asian or Native American residents living in Hazel Crest then; however since 2000 their populations have increased markedly due to immigration from China and other Asia countries. In 2000 there were 718 housing units in total – 563 apartments and 102 single family homes – with a median rent price of $2,500/month; however according as of 2010 these Units had all sold for prices over $5 million leaving only 185 apartments still available on an open market basis with rents starting at just $1 million/year! In addition some excellent schools such as Chaska Woods High School offer wonderful opportunities not only for students but also their parents who can enjoy great public education right here in our town too!

Hazel Crest was a small village in Clay County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,391 at the 2000 census. It is now a ghost town. The village was founded in 1892 by William and Mary Hazel. They were the first white people to settle there. The village had two stores and one post office. In 1909, it had six residents and $2 per week in revenue from rent of its two homes. The Hazel Crest Massacre took place on October 22, 1893 when four men from the village came into contact with five white men who were hunting game near the village. One of the men, John Aiken Sr., shot and killed one of the Hazel Crest natives named Abram Brown while he was trying to cross a stream with his rifle; Brown died instantly as he fell into the water. The other three villagers - Harry Dunham, Charles Goodrich, and Willard Putnam - ranged against Aiken and shot him dead before retreating back to their horses; they then abandoned theirweapons behind them when they reached safety (Williamson 1996). That event has been cited as one of the most tragic examples of violence against innocents in early 20th century America (Fryer 1992). Hazel Crest's economy declined after World War II due to competition from larger villages such as Gurnee and Joliet; however, it continued to decline until its abandonment in 2000 by its last resident Jeanette Whitehead-Moses (Whitehead-Moses 2003).
