The first settlers in what is now Hazel Crest were farmers who arrived around 1836. In 1857, the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad reached Hazel Crest and began to bring people and goods to Springfield. The community grew quickly because of its location on the railroad tracks and its easy access to markets in Springfield and other nearby towns. By 1870, Hazel Crest had a post office, two churches (one Presbyterian, one Methodist), a schoolhouse (grades K-12), three homes for rent (two were occupied by traders from Chicago), and about 30 residents. In 1872, the Illinois Central Railroad built a line south from Rome to Hazel Crest. This new line brought more people and businesses to the town; by 1880, it had a grocery store, two hotels/motels (one operated by an entrepreneur named John Ahern), six stores/marketplaces (five of which were operated by local merchants), four restaurants/bars/nightclubs (three of which were owned by businessmen or city officials), four schools (grades K-12 through adult school classes), one library (!—the first library in McLean County was founded in 1865!), two water tanks (for supplying citizens with drinking water!), plus many other infrastructure projects that helped make Hazel Crest one of the most rapidly growing communities in central Illinois during this time period. During World War II, Hazel Crest became an important site for military training exercises being conducted near Rome due to its close proximity to both that city and Springfield! After hostilities ended in 1945, much of the growth that had taken place since before World War II stopped as people returned home or left for other parts ofcentral Illinois. But although much has slowed down over time since then - such as changes in economic conditions - some aspects have continued unchanged including increased housing prices values within reach for many residents who are still drawn to this vibrant community despite all that has happened!
Hazel Crest was founded in 1848 by Capt. John Ritchie and his wife, Ann. The town was named after the hazelnut tree that grew in its namesake's orchard. In 1893, Hazel Crest became a city and was renamed after Philadelphia 76ers player Julius Erving.
