The history of Hazel Crest begins with John A. Hazelnutt who served as its first Mayor from 1887 until his death in 1922. In 1903, he donated land for what would become Hazel Crest High School which opened in 1905. For many years following high school graduation rates were low so classes were held at various community centers before being moved back into Hazeltine Hall starting in 1969 when Hazel Crest Intermediate School opened doors for grades 9-12th grade students from Grades 1-5th grade were consolidated into Hazeltine Hall until 1984 when they finally graduated from high school there as well becoming part of Hazeltine Hall even further along river bank setting ground for future elementary/middle schools that now line both sides of street which connects city center with village center all while still retaining name "Hazel Crest"

Hazel Crest was a small village in Richland County, Illinois, United States. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Hazel Crest was Samuel Wirths, who arrived in 1814. In 1848, John Pemberton and his family came to the area from Addison Township, Michigan and bought a tract of land from the Sachem Potawatomi band. They built a cabin on top of an old quarry where they mined limestone for building materials and sold it to settlers in 1850. In 1852, Sidney Sayers laid out a town plat for Hazel Crest on land that he had purchased from the Potawatomi band. The first post office opened in Hazel Crest on December 12, 1852. The name change to honor James Gillett (1811-1878), an early settler who donated land for the town center and two schools. As more settlers came to Hazel Crest,orgeous new homes were erected along Elm streets such as Mrs. Jane Belding's brick home which still stands today; Mr./Ms.'s home on Euclid Avenue; Dr./Mrs.'s house across Elm Street from Daughters of Charity School; Mrs./Mr.'s home near Third Street; George Weems' three story frame farmhouse with septic system; Hiram Jenson's two story wooden frame cottage (later used as a ladies' laundry); Atherton House - later known as "The Brown House" - built by Drury & Company grocery store owner Ebenezer Brownell in 1863; Josephine Owen's three stories wood frame house (now known as "Nancy Owen House"); First Presbyterian Church - also known as Zion Baptist Church - built by Rev Fenton Waddoups in 1865 using bricks masonry taken from New York City churches destroyed during the Great Fire of 1871; and finally Mrs./Dr.'s house at Seventh Street between Elm and Cottage Streets after her death in 1897 In 1898, when Hazel Crest incorporated as a village, it had 992 residents including 232 males over the age of 15 and 248 females over 15 years old A high school was organized within Hazel Crest by 1903 with nine students enrolled grades 1-4 The first library branch opened its doors in 1905 . By 1930 there were 14 firefighters living within Village limits
