The city was founded in 1853 by a group of farmers from Vermont and New York City who arrived on the Vermilion River. Hazel Crest became an incorporated town in 1903. The first post office at Hazel Crest was established on December 10, 1853, and served until it closed on October 15, 1860. However, during this time period tensions between black Americans and white Americans began developing rapidly; this led to violence and social disharmony throughout much of downtown Hazel Crest. As a result of these changes, many African American residents left town over concerns about crime rates and discrimination they faced while living among whiteness; however, some people did stay until they were forced out by racist policies changed again following desegregation efforts within Illinois government during the late 1960s/early 1970s under then-Governor Richard Mott Jr.. In recent years Hazel Crest has experienced significant growth due largely to petroleum exploration activities conducted by oil companies operating within its boundaries; however some residents have voiced concerns about this development because it has led to increased traffic noise levels and some potential negative environmental effects including water shortages caused by underground drilling operations around town cores .
