Hazel Crest is located in Champaign County, Illinois. It is a small town of about 8,000 people and has a long history of rifle shooting. The town was founded in 1871 by Augustus Kelley and his family as part of the move from Decatur to Champaign County. Hazel Crest began hosting rifle shoots in 1883. In 1906, the National Rifle Association (NRA) bought the land that now includes Hazel Crest from the Kelley family. The NRA continues to own and operate the rifle ranges here today. Rifle shooting first began in Hazel Crest because there were no other places to shoot in rural Champaign County when Augustus Kelley moved there from Decatur. Today, rifles are still used extensively for hunting and target shooting here at the range, as well as for community events such as Fourth of July celebrations and outdoor concerts. There have been many tragedies associated with rifle shootings here over the years: The most famous tragedy happened on November 3rd, 1896 when six students died after being shot at a school party near Hazel Crest. Another tragedy took place on October 31st, 1957 when four teenagers were killed during a hunt for prairie dogs around town limits. And finally, on March 16th, 1966 two students were fatally shot at an open-air concert staged outdoors by local high school seniors just off Route 56 in front of their homes

Hazel Crest, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. Hazel Crest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Hazel Crest was John Haggerty who came to the area in 1836 from Virginia. John's brother-in-law, Alexander McKay, also founded Hazel Crest and began trading with Native Americans here. In 1847, George Washington Dixon homesteaded land east of present-day Hazel Crest on the banks of the Fox River. He named his farm "Dixonville" after himself and his wife Julia Child Dixon (1802-87). In 1854, two men by the name of White led a wagon train through central Illinois bound for Wabash River Valley near St. Louis via the Present Road and Rock Island Canal. They were prospectors seeking new oilfields to exploit. One man got lost over night while tracking down his trail; when he returned to camp that morning he found all his goods had been looted! This depositions helped lay the groundwork for later prosecutions against organized crime figures such as Al Capone and Meyer Lansky in Chicago during Prohibition era America In 1886 William J Harmon started farming west of present day Hazel Crest on what would become known as Harmon Township south of Decatur Street between Congress Avenue and Elmhurst Avenue (now Demarest Place). Mr. Harmon laid out Harmon Township which included much of today's Hazel Crest including its center oven village alongDecatur Street just north of President Roosevelt Drive/Highway 400W/I-88 exit ramp off I-88) . It should be noted that this early development took place within sight or hearing distance of then Chicago's famous Dearborn Market – an early major commercial center – now Midtown Chicago located deep inside Loop City boundaries

Hazel Crest is located on the east side of the Chicago metropolitan area and it is part of the Elmhurst–Oak Park–Hazel Crest Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community was organized as a station on the Chicago & Northwestern Railway in 1887. It became an incorporated village in 1903. The name "Hazel Crest" probably comes from two sources: one said that when General John Pershing's forces invaded Mexico during the Mexican-American War, they encountered hazel trees near where present-day Hazel Crest is located; and another source said that President James K. Polk visited Hazel Crest and called it "hazelnut heartland" because so many people were harvesting hazelnuts thereabouts. In 1915, Hazel Crest voted to annex parts of Oak Park Township to form a new municipality; this annexation was ratified by local officials but did not take effect until 1919 because Oak Park had already annexed most of neighboring Hinsdale Township. In 1924, Hazel Crest voters passed a resolution asking for cityhood status; this request was denied by the then-municipal government because it wanted to keep its rural character while becoming more urbanized. The first mayor of Hazel Crest was Hiram Sibley Browning Sr., who served from 1925 until his death in 1951. During World War II, Hazel Crest made significant contributions to both Allied and Axis forces through its production of rubber goods and munitions; also, postwar residents established various businesses in what had been a mostly agricultural community including several banks and multiple grocery stores before amalgamation into the city of Chicago in 1962 following¶the withdrawal of most manufacturing jobs in Illinois due to deindustrialization within 90 minutes following New York City's victory over Cuba in the Cold War In 1978, after years of declining population growth combined with increasing environmental concerns including allegations of water pollution caused by industrial emissions from nearby factories (later ruled false), Mayor White appointed Arie Luyendyk Jr., sonof Dutchman Arie Luyendyk III*, as CEO/President*of Pioneer National Bank which had become one of Cook County's largest employers since 1960†† *.
