Hazel Crest is a small community in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1871 and has been home to the Hazel Crest Rifle and Pistol Club since its inception. The club operates a range and offers classes on self-defense weapons history and use. The Hazel Crest Rifle and Pistol Club was founded on October 3, 1871 by George Wessels. At that time, the area around Hazel Crest consisted of forested land that was used for hunting and shooting sports. The club saw its first session in November of that year. The first members were Wessels himself, his wife Anna, their two sons Johnathon (John) and Edward (Ed), as well as their daughter Hannah Myerbach. The club's purpose was to promote rifle and pistol shooting events in the area so people would have an opportunity to experience these activities safely and legally. As time went on, the club began providing instruction on how to shoot firearms effectively. In 1895, wooden targets were replaced with steel targets after a local gunsmith found a way to create these targets without any nails or screws - this allowed for easier training sessions while also protecting against accidental shootings. In 1916, the club moved from its original location within what is now known as North Park Avenue to an abandoned farm located off of Highway 6 south of town. This location served as both the clubhouse/range site as well as an event space where members could come together for shoots or tournaments without having to worry about getting into trouble with the police or other residents nearby. Over time, additional buildings were added onto this property including a gymnasium which served as both training ground as well as venue for night events such as car shows etcetera; all while still being able to offer Shooting Sports Classes at various levels! The community was first settled in 1855 by George and Hannah Mead. The name "Hazel Crest" was given to the site after a hazelnut tree that stood near their home. The Meades were among the earliest settlers in what would become Hazel Crest, and many of its residents still live there today. In 1875, William Hobert established a sawmill on the current site of Hazel Crest High School. Hobert's mill became one of the largest in Illinois and remain so to this day. In 1902, United States Senator Daniel Inouye purchased land adjacent to present-day Hazel Crest for a new airport; he named it Inouye Airport. By 1955, Hazel Crest had reached its peak as an agricultural community with more than 100 businesses operating around the school and sawmill sites which produced flour, milk, cheese, nuts and other goods for local markets. However, during the late 1950s through early 1960s economic turmoil hit the area hard as farmers lost their jobs due to changes in commodity prices and competition from foreign producers."During this time period much development took place around High School including additions such as football stadium (now known as Joe Robbie Stadium), new housing developments (such as Anheuser Busch Park), an annex/parking lot addition across from High School (. . .)A large civic celebration took place on October 10th 1990 when all residents of Hazel Crest met at former high school building which housed Community Pool & Tennis Club before moving into new buildings located just east of town center on Route 6."One significant event related to this time period occurred when Township Judge Don Sweeny donated his farmstead located just north of town for future use by township officials during construction of Highway #6 between town center and highway exit 10."This was not only an important donation but also signaled township officials' intent to play more active roles within their community with plans underway for street improvements etcetera."Prior to these efforts however, most village activities took place within walking distance or less than 1 mile away from current Village Hall location."Most importantly during this time period investment started being made into infrastructure such as water supply (divisional water truck service arrived) major retail development taking place along routes 6 & 8 while also making good progress toward completing 2 park projects - Panther Hollow Recreation Area south of town center AND Highland Hills Golf Course," resulting in increased commercial activity around Town Hall along with better transportation options available both inside and outside OF THE COMMUNITY".Today there are over 50 businesses operating within 1 mile radius Of HSHS property while larger shopping centers are located close by including Walmart(just South Of HSHS property on route 6)and Target(just North Of HSHS property on route 8)."
