The first post office was established in 1846, and its name changed to "Hazel Crest" in 1853. In 1870, local farmers formed a company to purchase 8 miles (13 km) of northwest-southwest railroad line from the Illinois Central Railroad company for $1 million (equivalent to $ in ). The new company named itself Prairie du Chien & Hazelwood Railway Company and began construction of what would become known as "The Great Northern". This railway connected Hazel Crest with Chicago and other northern cities; it opened for service in 1871. aforementioned companies were merged into two others when they merged into The Chicago and Northwestern Railway Company; this latter company also owned much of The Great Northern's former line through Hazel Crest. After years of construction (and during which many homes were constructed or acquired around here), The Great Northern finally reached Hazel Crest station on October 15, 1914 – five days after World War I ended! As one might expect given its location within close proximity to both downtownChicago and Rockford Center – where many factories functioned during that time – Hazel Crest quickly became an important node on this major artery linking these two large American metropolises. And although today's economy may not be as sizeable as it once was - due largely to suburbanization and retirements among workers who formerly labored along those routes – Hazel Crest has managed to maintain some degree of vitality throughout all these changes... especially given that its residents have always been very proud their town had such an important role within our larger community!
