Hazel Crest was laid out in 1871 by John A. Hough and his partner Amos Garton. The name "Hazel Crest" comes from a tree near the town's center that was once an important source of sugarcane. The first settlers in Hazel Crest were members of the Methodist Church who arrived around 1872. They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Hazel Crest". By 1880, the church had moved to its present location on Old State Road which served as their main square until they built a new building on Elm Street in 1906. In 1881, Jethro Cook purchased 20 acres (8 ha) of land north of town and donated it to the community for use as a public school district called Cook Prairie School District No 2. The first school buildings were erected here between 1886-1892 by John Darrow, who also served as Superintendent for about 25 years until his retirement in 1932 In 1909, entrepreneur Julius Rosenwald established his own grocery store in Hazel Crest which soon became one of Sangamon County's most successful businesses Rosenwald later donated all but two acres (6 ha) of his property to Hazel Crest for use as agricultural acreage and remains an important benefactor to the community today Local residents have long enjoyed access to some of Illinois' best fishing spots just minutes away from their door thanks to nearby Clear Creek Lake A post office opened here on October 3rd, 1889 and remained open until 1959 As agriculture gradually shifted from subsistence farming into more commercial ventures during the late 19th century and early 20th century, jobs dried up or were lost when larger farms became mechanized; however there has never been any significant decline or abandonment among local residents with regards to Hazel Crest's economy . Instead over time many businesses have migrated here such as restaurants began opening up along Clear Creek Boulevard Race Course Drive after prohibition ended in 1933 while other locally owned businesses continue to thrive including four banks - First National Bank & Trust Company; Union Pacific Railroad Banking Company; State Street Savings Institution & Trust Company; and PeoplesBank - still thriving strong over sixty years since establishment
