Hazel Crest is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Hazel Crest is one of the most ethnically diverse towns in America and has a wide variety of cultures represented. The town also has a rich history dating back to when it was founded as a farming community by settlers from Canada in 1855. The town began as a small settlement on the banks of the West Branch of the Chicago River. In 1855, two brothers, Isaac and Solomon Goldsmith, started a farmstead in what is now Hazel Crest. By 1860, Hazel Crest had grown to over 100 residents and became an important center for agricultural production in southern Cook County. The Goldsmiths continued to operate their farm until they sold it in 1907 to James Fenton who renamed it Fenton Manor after himself and his wife froze cream for shipment across Canada on their winter home there. In 1910, Hazel Crest incorporated as a village under the name "Hazel Crest". On December 15th of that year, voters passed an ordinance chartering the first municipal corporation in Cook County - Village Corporation No 2 - with nine members including four votingldermen and five assessors responsible for all aspects of township government including: public works; education; fire protection; zoning; elections; housing development; health care services; and economic development within its boundaries . Hazel Crest, Illinois is a small town in Pulaski County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. Hazel Crest is located in the center of Pulaski County on the east side of the Moline River. It is bordered to the north by Mount Zion National Park and to the east by Sangamon County. The name "Hazel Crest" comes from a large maple tree near the town's core. The first post office in Hazel Crest was established on October 12, 1864, and was known as "Benton." The first settler in Hazel Crest was Isaac Henson Jr., who arrived with his family in 1865. By 1870, there were six families living here. In 1872–1875, two brothers named Moses built a log cabin on what is now Elm Street just south of present-day State Road 722. They called their settlement "Mosesville." In 1879–1881, three more settlers arrived—George Washington Smith (born about 1798), John Crouch (born 1830) and Abraham Sibley (born about 1830). This group named their new village "Hazel Ridge." In 1882–1884, a four-and-a-half mile long railroad called the Hannibal & Northern Railway came through town and changed hands several times before it finally connected with Chicago at Red Bluff Junction on May 26th of that year. At this time Hazel Crest had only one store and one schoolhouse; however soon after rose another store and school building which became respectively known as First National Bank Building (now part of FMCG restaurant) and Second National Bank Building (now home to Town Hall). About 1900 another two stores were opened by Wm Culp & Bros.; these buildings still stand today adjacent to First National Bank Buildings Nos 2 & 3A. One can imagine what must have been an overwhelming environment for such few people whenuddenly trains started coming into town all day long! But things began to improve quickly since then with construction of what would become known as Route 66 which passed through town making it easier for people to get around! By 1916 Hazel Crest had seven businesses including three churches: Methodist Episcopal Church No 2 across from First National Bank Building No 2A along Elm Street; Presbyterian Church across from Humanities Center or Grange School; Independent Baptist Church also across from First National Bank Building No 2A; Congregationalist church behind current Post Office Building along North Avenue - this churchyard still remains today! So much has changed within such a short amount of time – but yet so much has remained unchanged! Today we enjoy picnic weekends at local park like Mount Zion Conservation Area where we can hike/exercise our dogs while watching birds during morning hours or take some literature tours offered during lunchtime outside library! We are blessed every day that God has given us this wonderful community… He knows best!!!
The city of Hazel Crest was founded in 1847 by the brothers Amos and Solomon Hazel. The city was named after a hazelnut tree that grows near the original site. Hazel Crest became a town in 1892, and a city in 1959.
