Hazel Crest is a town in Pike County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1851 by John Hazel and James Caldwell as a trading post on the confluence of the Kankakee River and Black Creek. In 1892, it became one of six townships in Pike County organized under the sheriff's office system. In 1904, Hazel Crest was consolidated with other townships to form the new county of Pike County. The first settlers in what is now Hazel Crest were farmers who came from central Illinois after being driven out of their land by Indians during the AmericanRevolution. They built homes near present-day Hazel Crest on high ground that overlooked both rivers. The first store opened in 1853 and soon afterward a Methodist church was built (the current one). A flour mill followed soon after and other businesses also soon began to open up: hardware store, livery stable, bank (the first in Illinois), grocery store (owned by local farmer Wm Henson), schools (three primary schools; onegraded into junior high school status in 1954), post office (1856) and several churches (one Baptist; two Methodists; one Catholic). After numerous floods which destroyed many homes along Black Creek throughout much of Indiana Territory during 1861-64 due to an unseasonable rainstorm, John Denton established a dry goods store there called "Denton's" which continued until 1905 when it went out of business because farmers could not get wood for their ovens from where they got their hay from within ten miles of Hazel Crest! In 1907, when agricultural prices collapsed following World War I due to overproduction caused by innovations introduced by companies such as Monsanto & others, Hazel Crest experienced its heaviest economic slump since early 1800s when twenty three men lost their jobs at Jantz Paper Mill while working sixty hours a week! More than half his customers left him too! Only four families still live here today among those original settler’s descendants! This downturn led to industrialization with agriculture becoming more predominant as a sector; however employment opportunities for those displaced have not always been good enough for them to return home so most continue living away from home or rural areas like Elmhurst IL or Joliet IL where they face discrimination even today because they are considered belonging only to certain racial/ethnic groups rather then simply being Americans who happened to live outside major cities
