Hazel Crest has experienced several economic downturns over time; however, it has rebounded each time since then. Its economy is based primarily on agriculture and retail trade although there are also some small businesses located within the community itself that provide services such as plumbing, car repair, home cleaning etcetera. Outside of town there are a few parks with baseball diamonds, tennis courts and other activities for children including soccer teams from both District 2 (northwest suburbs) and District 3 (southwestern suburbs). There is also an annual fair which features local artisans as well as food vendors from around Chicagoland

Hazel Crest, Illinois is a small town in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,493 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Midwestern United States and is bordered by Orion Township to the north, west and south; Mount Carmel Township to the east; and Mokena Township to the southeast. The first settler in Hazel Crest was John Ahern who arrived in 1829. In 1837-38 John & Anna Kapp built a cabin on a hillock near what is now Hazel Crest Middle School. On July 12th of that year an account from Abraham Lincoln appears in "The Daily Northwestern" newspaper: On July 12th last (1837), three men from this place went into pioneer territory in what is now Northwest Indiana Territory and erected upon high ground about one mile northwest of this village their rude log cabin which they named 'Hazel Crest.' They remained there for about two years until they came back with some other people and erected again another cabin on land situated three miles northeast of this village on which they still reside. This second building was also called 'Hazel Crest' until it burned down within ten years ago. The present residence of Mr. Ahern stands where his first one once did*fn1 *. *This account may be correct as there are references to a logging camp being located near where he later built his house.*fn2
In 1871, the town of Hazel Crest was organized. The first post office was established in 1872. In 1907, the name of the town was changed to Hazelwood. On October 1, 1922, Hazel Crest was incorporated as a Village. In 1951, Hazel Crest became a City and on November 3rd, 2002 it had its first election as Mayor/City Councilmember with Michael Fusaro being elected as mayor.
