Hazel Crest was founded in 1871 by citizens of what is now Aurora Township and was named after a tree that grew near the town's original courthouse building. The first post office in Hazel Crest opened in 1874. In 1907, the name of the town was changed to honor John Fenton Hazel, an important figure in American education who served as president of Houghton College from 1903 to 1909 and as Provost and Vice President of Cornell University from 1911 to 1913. The community experienced growth during World War II when many local businesses came into being related to the war effort such as munitions production plants or airplane manufacturing facilities. After 1945, however, growth slowed until it reached its current level around 2000 when a new shopping center opened adjacent to the old high school. The retail sector has continued to grow since then with restaurants and other businesses opening up along with two high schools which have both seen expansions over time; one in 2002 and one in 2009. Hazel Crest is located about 15 miles (24 km) north-northwest of Chicago on Interstate 55 and has a total area of . As of the 2010 census there were 1,811 people living within its limits including 812 households and 151 families residing inside city limits while 473 households and 158 families resided outside city limits (the largest number outside city limits being 176 families). The racial makeup of Hazel Crest was 98% White alone while 1% Black or African American made up 0.3% of its total population. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 2% of all residents while 3% were non-Hispanic white men who self-identified as black or African American. Outlying areas had no significant impact on either racial makeup or residency patterns for Hazel Crest overall
