One notable change occurred in 2003 when Mayor Thomas J. Hogan resigned to become U.S. Senator from Illinois after being elected to two terms as mayor of Chicago; his successor appointed Mayor Richard Mularkey as director of housing development and public works within the commune government instead of continuing with Hogan's original plan which would have put Mularkey direct control over both aspects of planning and development within Hazel Crest Community Development Corporation (HDC). In addition to its namesake tree variety (Hazelnuts are grown here), other common crops grown here include corn, peas, beans, potatoes and applesauce production; dairy products such as cream cheese and milk are also produced commercially but not distributed regionally or nationally because they are too high-fat for many human consumption preferences. Additionally, hazelnuts are used extensively in some local foods—such as baked goods and ice cream—because their flavor is similar to that found in European hickory nuts that were popularized hereabouts during the late 1800s through early 1900s before becoming available all over North America imported from Europe via shipwrecked sailors who brought back contact with Native Americans while ashore on some remote islands near Boston Harbor during what is now known as Mayflower Week (1620–24)). Hazel Crest has one grocery store operated by HDC while all other services provided by resident residents including fire protection/first responder service/mesquite grilling/garbage collection etc., are contracted out either through village contractors or private companies which provide these same services at lower prices due to limited resources within HDC budget range
