The first guns in Hazel Crest were pistols. The town finally outlawed handguns in 1881, but the practice continued. In 1907, a rifle shooting club was formed and began using shotguns. In 1912, a machine gun was brought into Hazel Crest and used for the first time at a local fair. In 1915, an artillery company moved into Hazel Crest and began using cannons to shoot targets. In 1916-1917, there was an epidemic of smallpox in the town and many people died from it. In 1917-1920, the US government built a new airfield in nearby Rock Valley and used it for military purposes. During World War II (1939-1945), Hazel Crest became one of several towns in Illinois that accepted Japanese citizens as residents. This led to some tension because some of the Japanese Citizens Army members had made their way into the town through various means including underground channels or counterfeit passports.
Hazel Crest is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. Hazel Crest is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet metropolitan area. Hazel Crest was laid out by fur traders in 1814 and named for hazelnuts. The first settler in what is now Hazel Crest was James McDonald. Hazel Crest became a village in 1913 and remained so until 1959 when it became a town under the name of Hazleton. A change to Hazel Crest took place on January 1, 1959 due to an error made by the US Post Office which listed both villages as one entity under the name Hazleton; this caused confusion among residents who had been confused about which municipality they should send their mail to. The townsite of Hazleton was annexed by Hazel Crest on July 1, 1960 and voted into incorporation on September 15 of that year. On October 2nd of that year, Mayor Artie Wehner declared that Hazel Crest had become an independent city after years of planning and discussion between the two townsites which were struggling with each other for control over their own affairs; this move created much excitement within the community as it marked a new era where both cities could work together better than ever before. Hazel Crest has experienced many changes throughout its history including annexation by Chicago (from Hare Township), fire suppression ordinances changed hands several times (between 1957-1960 & 1961-1963), mayors (four total) with Artie Wehner being considered one of the most successful mayors in city history, urban growth making access to public transportation difficult (since annexing), steady stream of new residents moving into town from surrounding suburbs bringing restlessness and turnover with few if any long term plans or goals for what would come next – until today when many people feel like things are finally stabilizing following some tough times during recent years such as low commodity prices/manufacturing outsourcing leading to layoffs/devastation within local businesses but also renewed hope since President Donald J Trump’s visit recently

Hazel Crest, Illinois was founded in 1847 by Dr. John D. Rockefeller and his wife Sarah Jane Rockefeller. The original site of Hazel Crest was a farmstead on the banks of the Des Plaines River. In 1868, the family moved to a ranch located near present-day Hazel Crest.Dr. John D. Rockefeller died in 1912 and his widow Sarah Jane Rockefeller continued to operate the ranch until her death in 1976. After her death, theranch passed through several hands before it was sold to David Mazer in 1984 who donated it to the school district that currently operates it as Hazel Crest High School. Hazel Crest is one of only two high schools in Cook County (the other is Glenbrook South).The town of Hazel Crest was platted on March 8, 1872, by George Hildebrandt and Horace Greeley under the name "Hazelcroft." On October 15, 1886, when Chicago annexed Lake Michigan east of its current borders, Holly Grove became part of Chicago; however, because Holly Grove contained both Blackstone Creek and ravines running into Lake Michigan proper (including parts of what are now Elmhurst and Rosedale), growth at Holly Grove slowly diminished over time due to competition from Oak Park and Riverdale which were annexed soon thereafter
Hazel Crest was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was located in the east-central part of the state. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. Hazel Crest is now a ghost town and is included in the Hazel Crest Micropolitan Statistical Area.
