Hazel Crest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It lies in the west-central part of the township on the eastern edge of Chicago. Hazel Crest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler to move to what is now Hazel Crest was David McLaughlin in 1837. McLaughlin named his new land "Hazel Crest" after a nearby tree he saw while surveying his original land grant from Congress following the Northwest Indian Treaty of 1833. The name stuck and today's community takes its name from that location as well as another early settler, John Doherty (1823-1908), who donated land for a school and post office within what is now Hazel Crest Township. In 1854, when Hickory Grove Township was organized, it included much of present-day Hazel Crest Township including most of what is now Hazelhurst Road and parts of present-day Oak Forest Drive and Deming Road. At that time there were only 2 residents living in Hickory Grove: David Johnson and George Washington Smith (the latter also known as "Pete"). In 1860, when Hickory Grove Township was reorganized into Cook County by Act 735 of 1871, all but 10 percent of its lands became part of new Addison Township which then included much of present day Hazel Crest Township eastward to Deming Road; this change would eventually result in Hicksville being incorporated into Hairland Park in 1922 despite strong protests by some residents who wanted their town to remain within their own township boundaries. A number of small businesses were established around this time including a post office (established October 1861), an inn/livery stable (March 1865), two grocery stores (November 1865) – one located on Deming Road south near Present Day Oak Forest Drive and one on Elmwood Avenue north nearpresent day Harlem Avenue – both operated by Ephraim Hagerty until May 1902 when he sold his store to Isaac Siegel & Sons with fellow storekeeper Solomon Singer moving into Hagerty's vacated space soon afterwards; Hagerty later expanded his business operation into produce sales before leaving business entirely for good in 1925 Two churches were built between about 1870 and 1880: First Presbyterian Congregational Church on Elkwood Avenue west side opposite present day High School building (built about 1870) - which remains standing today - followed shortly thereafter by Methodist Episcopal Zion church built about 1880 just east side Orchard Street across fromPresent Day College Prep Academy building - also still standing today Daughters Of Charity conventnery built circa 1889 just northeast corner High School property line - demolished c 1920s . There are no remaining traces or remnants from those early days other than some local farm acreage Now used for housing developments . There are numerous contributing historical sites located throughout town including: A grove honoring those lost during World War I at Soldier Field off North Side Boulevard; Bicentennial Hall dedicated May 5th 1944 featuring replicas depicting scenes from pioneer life inside& outside home where many families lived & played; Cemetery close totown limits contains more than 500 graves mainly dating back to 1800s
