In 1902, Hazel Crest residents voted to secede from McDonough County and form their own government under the name of "Hazel Crest Township." On October 10th, 1920, Hazel Crest's centennial anniversary celebration was held with speeches by President Warren G Harding and Mayor Alfred Pecora Jr.. On November 3rd 1922, citizens raised money to build a library which opened its doors that same year. That same year also saw the opening of the town's first post office - which served as an annex to nearby Highland Heights post office until 1969 when Highland Heights merged into Hazel Crest proper; that annex remained open until 1984 when it too merged into Hazel Crest proper. During World War II (1939-1945), Hazel Crest produced nearly two million servings of military rations for soldiers stationed in Europe and North Africa; over half those items were procured through mail order from American companies such as JBLG & Sons Inc., USO Stores Inc., etc.; many products such as gasoline cans were made using local milling techniques unavailable anywhere else due to wartime production shortages caused by America's involvement in World War II).
