Hazel Crest is a census-designated place in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,662 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Hazel Crest was named for Hazel Tree Farm, located near present-day Hazel Crest. The first settler in what is now Hazel Crest Township was Ebenezer Horton who arrived in 1837. He and his family were the first white people to live within what would become Aurora Township (now Kane County) and they name their farm "Hazel Tree Farm". The town of Hazel Crest was platted in 1868 by John Hays and Abel Weeks as a result of land acquisition from the Hagar Property Company which had been organized in 1854 under the name 'Chicago Land Company'. The company had purchased a strip of land north of Aurora that extended east to modern day Joliet. In 1870, John Hays donated 3 acre (.10 km²)of his town lot for use as a public square. On December 2nd, 1870, Mayor Dickey proclaimed 'Hazel Forest' an open field or village with twenty homes - four on each side of one long axis running east-west; this rectangular plot became known as 'The Square'. In 1871 when Aurora Township was created from parts of Cook County lying south of Loop 610th Street it included all territory west of Kedzie Avenue (northwest corner of Harrison Park), including much that later became Hazel Crest township. When Cook county lines were redrawn following the November 16th boundary change that gave Cook County to Lucas County the old line between Hazel Crest and Aurora ran along Kedzie Avenue northeasterly to just beyond Oak Lawn Road northwestof Lakeshore Drive where it crossed into Lucas County before continuing along Lake Shore Drive into new Burlington parish (later Cook county). This line has never been clearly defined although some residents claim it ran parallel to Dearborn Road northeastof Elmhurst Road past Northbrook elementary school then continued easterly until it met up with Racine Street just after Bluffs High School today's Elmhurst Rd/Highway 14 intersection . "In 1871 when Aurora Township was created from parts of Cook County lying south of Loop 610th Street it included all territory west of Kedzie Avenue (northwest corner of Harrison Park), including much that later became Hazel Crest township."

Hazel Crest, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It was platted on November 4, 1892 by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. The name of the town is derived from two coats of arms which were given to it by its founders. The first shield features a red maple tree with green leaves; the second shield features a white oak tree with red leaves. The town was originally called "Niles". On December 12, 1907, Hazel Crest was renamed in honor of General John J. Pershing who fought in World War I and later became an American hero due to his work at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Hazel Crest has had a number of noteworthy residents over the years including former Senator Bill Clinton (D-NY), author Toni Morrison (born 1930), basketball player Julius Erving (1927-2002), and entrepreneur Dick Costolo (1925-2005). In addition, Hazel Crest has been home to many professional athletes including NFL players Derrick Brooks and Curtis Martin as well as ice hockey players Rick Nash and Ilya Kovalchuk.
Hazel Crest was founded in 1824 by farmers from the town of Hazelhurst, Illinois. The community grew rapidly after it was designated as a township in 1834. In 1845, the township became a city and Hazel Crest became one of the largest cities in Illinois. The city prospered until World War II when it was hit hard by the war and its economy collapsed. After the war, Hazel Crest declined further and dissolved into small towns throughout Illinois.
