Hazel Crest is located on State Route 61, about 12 miles (19 km) south of the city of Chicago and 8 miles (13 km) north of the village of Mount Prospect. The first European to visit what is now Hazel Crest was Jedediah Smith in 1818 when he and his party were exploring thei lands along the Mississippi River from Prairie du Chien to St. Louis. He named one of his rivers "Hazel" after a nearby tree that he noted had a “fine green jonquil” flower in full bloom during his journey through this area. Hazel Crest was platted as a town on November 3, 1867 by an act of the state legislature following approval by voters in a special election held two days earlier. At its incorporation, Hazel Crest became one of twelve townships in Cook County. The population growth rate for Hazel Crest was significantly greater than for any other township throughout its early years; it reached 100% within five years and remained above that rate until 1971 when it began to decline gradually due to suburbanization and other factors.
