The community was first settled in 1871 by John Gibson and his family. In 1903, Harry Weems opened a grocery store in Hazel Crest and it remain as one of its mainstay businesses until it closed in 1984. A post office was established at Hazel Crest in 1902, and remained open until 1964. In 1957, Harold Pritzker donated land for a high school which would become Hazel Crest High School. The school opened its doors in 1959 and has since grown into one of Chicagoland's most popular educational institutions with more than fourteen thousand students enrolled annually.
