Hazel Crest was founded in 1875 by John Denton (1851-1927) and his family as a small farming community near Crystal Lake on Chicago's west side. The city's first settlers were families from Racine, Wisconsin. The name "Hazel Crest" was chosen because of the abundance of huckleberries that grew there. The first post office in Hazel Crest opened in 1876. In 1886, the railroad arrived and quickly attracted many businesses to Hazel Crest; including a millinery shop, grocery store, sawmill, bakery and hotel. In 1911–12, Hazel Crest became home to America's first outdoor track meet when it hosted the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships for football and track & field events. In 1916-17, Hazel Crest also played host to America's first soccer championship game when it hosted an international match between Sweden and Canada during World War I. Many people who lived here during those years remember that there was no streetlights so everyone had to use porch light towers to see their opponents on the playing field; which led to some great close games! In 1925–26 Mayor John Denton opened what is now known as "The Village", which served as headquarters for all civic activity within Hazel Crest until 1961 when that function moved downtown into City Hall building then used by other local governments throughout Kane County until being renovated/opened as a bioscience center by University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2014 before serving as anchor tenant since its conversion into an apartment complex called Regency Oak Place II with several thousand units along with public plaza across two blocks bounded by First Street on one side and Third Street on another block - becoming one of largest mixed-use developments east of Chicago having over 100 acres or more dedicated exclusively or partially to housing purpose both inside/included within dense urban fabric while occupying large portion (upwards of 60%) contiguous land parcel boundaries entire block bounded only by First Street - becoming one of few self contained planned communities in Midwest larger than 25 acre size having integral infrastructure needed for major professional sports teams multiple NBA teams large NHL team AHL team minor baseball team golf courses innumerable restaurants etc., . . . primarily suburban town gradually slipping behind rapidly growingChicago neighborhoods

The town was post office founded in 1836 by Benjamin Hazel and named for its natural gas deposits near Hazel Crest. In 1853 it became a village and remained so until 1959 when it became a town under the name of Sangamon Township. There are two primary schools in Hazel Crest: one public and one private. There are also three churches: First Baptist Church (1836), Methodist Episcopal Church (1893), and Lutheran Church (1912). A fire station serves the community which has six fire engines including two Ladder Units; four bicycles; and one bulldozer. In addition to its primary businesses, Hazel Crest also has several small shops and restaurants along with a few cemeteries including Forest Hills Cemetery (now closed) and Mount Olivet Cemetery (now closed).
