Hazel Crest, Illinois is a small town in Carbondale Township, Cook County, Illinois. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was founded by John Hazel and his wife Sarah in 1868 as a farming settlement on the east side of Carbondale Creek. The first post office was established in 1871. In 1886, Hazel Crest became a village incorporated under the name of Hazel Park. In 1902, it reverted to its original name and lost its township status; however, it continued to be governed by Carbondale Township officials until 1959. Hazel Crest has experienced some significant growth over the years - it now has a large high school (Hazel Crest High School), three churches (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; Presbyterian; Methodist), two bars/restaurants (Zig Zig Gourmet & JJ's Sports Bar & Grill), and several businesses including First National Bank, Ford Motor Company dealership, Chilton Home Services and many more. There are also several parks located within walking distance of the community: Clearbrook Park on the border with Harveyville to the south and Niles Forest Preserve just outside town limits to the north-west. There have been numerous attempts made to make Hazel Crest an entertainment destination - among these were a movie theater complex that opened in 2001 and closed after one year due to financial difficulties; an amphitheater that opened in 2003 but closed after two months due to lack of attendance; and a golf course that opened in 2006 but failed to generate much interest from residents or developers alike. Despite these attempts there has never been any real success story when it comes to bringing development or tourism into this small communities near Chicago proper - despite this there is still potential for growth should something newcome along that would enable Hazel Crest experiences greater notoriety both domestically and internationally

Hazel Crest is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,163 at the 2010 census. Hazel Crest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Hazel Crest were German immigrants who arrived in 1847. A post office called "Hazel" was established in 1852, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1860, a group of Methodist missionaries settled here and organized the towns of Bloomington (nowNormal) and Oak Park (now Oak Park-RiverWoods). The community of Hazel Crest was founded on November 10, 1865 by Hiram Hays and others from Decatur Township, Indiana as a result of the Great Migration from the Midwest to the North American continent. At its inception, Hazel Crest had an area of just 12 acres (5 hectares). By 1870, however, its population had swollen to 100 residents and by 1880 it had reached 300 inhabitants. The town's growth accelerated during the late 1800s due to railroads coming through town and new factories opening up along the Chicago River. In 1902–1903, construction began on what would become one of America's largest transportation projects: the Chicago Northwestern Railway's new line from Joliet to Elgin. This project would see much development within Hazel Crest; for example, lumberyards were built near Main Street while hotels were constructed along South Hermitage Avenue which became known as "the street that led to nowhere." By 1915-16 there were over 1,500 residents living in Hazel Crest proper with an additional 2200 residents living off-site around it including 1000 students attending local schools founded by Reverend John Wesley Funkhouser early that decade. That same year saw significant changes within the community when Mayor Harry Siedlecki announced plans for a new high school located adjacent to existing Walmart shopping center on South Hermitage Avenue which would serve both rural east suburbanites as well as city dwellers downtown who currently walked or took public transportation to get to their jobs. It wasn't long before developers started touting this proposed development as becoming "Hazel Crest Boulevard," turning what once amounted primarily to rural farmland into one of America's most vibrant urban areas where today you can find numerous grocery stores (Grocery Outlet Centers - GOC), small businesses (Joe's Pizza & Pasta), professional services buildings such as law firms and dentists' offices (Dentist Outlet Centers - DENTIST), large parks complete with tennis courts/basketball Courts/ soccer fields etc., Ford dealership locations (!), numerous residences such as 3 story mansions complete with swimming pools (& spa) etc.,etc... A number of things about this period helped contribute significantly towards Hazel Crest being one of America’s most popular towns during this time period including: First being our location on Chicago’s newly developed Midway section between DowntownChicago & Riverwoods; Second being our close proximity both geographically & economically unto other major cities via separate but interconnected streetcar lines running thru our neighborhoods providing daily access; ThirdLY our Mayor Harry Siedlecki’s continuous commitment TO THE COMMUNITY PUSHING FOR PROGRESS & PROVIDING DIRECTIONS THAT HELP APPEAL TO LOCAL COUNCIL MEMBERS SEEKING TO IMPLEMENT OFFICIAL LAWS IN OUR COMMUNITY; FourthLY Our elected officials who always seemed willing & able To listen (& respond) To OUR CONCERNS (& NEEDS); FifthLY Our many volunteer organizations serving us both physically AND emotionally!
