Hazel Crest is a city in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,811 at the 2010 census. Hazel Crest is the county seat of McLean County. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Hazel Crest were planters who rose to prominence in the early 1800s as one of the largest slaveowners and traders in Illinois. In 1827 they sold their interest in a plantation to Elijah Brantley and his wife Sarah for $5,000USD. Hazel Crest was laid out on May 6, 1830 by John Hargrave and James Caldwell from rural Livingston Township on land that had been granted to them by the General Assembly of Illinois as Partridge Springs Township (later Vernon Township). The name "Hazel" came from a nearby small stream which name apparently reminded early settlers of hazelnuts or huckleberries - unknown but likely given due to its proximity to trade routes connecting New Orleans with St Louis and other midwestern ports. The city's earliest buildings date back to 1871 when it was included within Vernon Township through an act of the General Assembly. At that time, most residents lived near either Centralia or Danville while goods brought downriver were unloaded at Elgin Street wharf before being transported north upriver along Dearborn Street and then across Lake Michigan into town where they would be sold off again before returning home for storage or further processing until delivery downriver finally reached consumers' doors - thus providing local farmers with potential customers who could also provide local labor for their businesses without having to leave their homes overnight. By 1900 Hazel Crest had grown sufficiently so that it incorporated as a municipality under the laws of Illinois on October 1st valve year; this occurred concurrent with similar changes throughout much of Northwestern Illinois following statehood within Indiana Territory on August 15th year meaning all municipalities enjoyed equal rights under state law regardless of whether they formed part thereof - including those located inside Indiana proper such as Hazel Crest which like much eastern Kane County did not secede until after passage of The Kansas Constitution creating Kansas Statehood on January 17th, 1901 making her first statewide political entity albeit still subject to state government rules and regulations - although technically remaining partofIllinois pending final approval from state supreme court pursuant to Article III Section 2(b) Of The Constitution belonging thereto A municipal election held November 3rd, 1902 resulted in a resounding victory for Democrat George Wickersham over Republican incumbent Elias Howe thereby giving initial indication that there may be some level of municipal self-government amongst Hazeltown's citizens despite continued prohibition by then GOP Govt official Amos Kendall against any form cf public participation beyond maintaining strict party line performance norms otherwise known as "the rule book". However nothing materialized beyond typical village/township elections held every three years thereafter featuring partisan edged candidates running unopposed subsequent TO&E inspection findings reportedly revealed widespread mismanagement & infractions including lacklustre street cleaning & failureto make required updates costing upwards OF$1MUSD per annum particularly impacting property values resulting in repeated violation notices being delivered personally by Kendall himself often leadingTO&E inspectors presence becoming increasingly conspicuous outside polling places rather than simply parked ATW front porch

At that time, its population numbered 2,827 people; however, by 2007 this number had decreased to 1,033 people due to development within the town boundaries and elsewhere within Cook County
