A post office was established at Hazel Crest in 1835; it remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1927, Zion Lutheran Church opened its doors to serve the growing community which included many African Americans who worked on local farms or as labourers for white farmers. After World War II many black farmers left Midwest farming for new opportunities in California and other parts of America but reminiscences about early Zion Lutheran Church date back to 1909 when Rev J Fenton preached there after moving from Cincinnati Ohio where he served as pastor of Hope Baptist Cathedral One reason why so few churches remain standing today among all denominations nationwide may be due to racism perpetuated by those with power within congregations which viewed African Americans as second class citizens with little hope for upward mobility according to persistent stereotypes even fifty years after emancipation

Hazel Crest, Illinois is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,593 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Hazel Crest was John Tilton in 1837. The name of the village was derived from a birch tree that grew near the intersection of State Road and Little Canada Road. A post office called Hazel Crest was established in 1847, and remained in operation until 1906. Hazel Crest experienced growth during the American Civil War; it became home to around 100 Union soldiers and their families who were stationed there for three months from October 1861 to November 1862. After the war, many returning home found work as lumberjacks or farmers on their new land. In 1865, Samuel Cramer donated 5 acres (20 hectares) of his woodlands to be used for a public school; this soon became known as Hazel Crest Township High School. During World War II, Hazel Crest played an important role in providing munitions supplies to nearby factories and military installations throughout Kane County. Many residents also worked within local businesses manufacturing weapons or related products. After Pearl Harbor brought an end to World War II, many industry jobs disappeared with it – but Hazel Crest continued to grow due to its location close to major highways and transportation systems. The present day of Hazel crest is one where comprehensive community services are available including: library/theatre/civic center/ park system/schools/emergency services etc., giving residents easy access to all they need without having far away places like Oak Park or Wheaton which have much more expensive rates for these amenities
Hazel Crest was founded in 1847 by Levi Hazel and his wife,annah. The first settlers were Nathan and Eliza Hazel. In 1853, Isaac Snyder moved to the area and started a grocery store. In 1865, John Aiken opened a bakery and in 1867, a hotel called the "Frisbee" was built on the current site of headquarters for American Telephone & Telegraph Company. The town prospered until the Great Chicago Fire destroyed much of downtown Hazel Crest in 1886.
