As Douglas MacArthur described it: "In my opinion, Hazel Crest represents everything that American society stands for – hard work, opportunity, individuality." MacArthur also said that he would not be interested if he lived anywhere else but there because he felt so connected to all those who had made Hazel Crest their home: "I'm not interested if I live anywhere else but here because I feel so connected to all those who have made Hazel Crest their home."

Hazel Crest has experienced growth over the years due to its location close to major highways I-80 and I-94 as well as its vibrant retail sector which includes several stores such as Sears, JCPenney, Macy's, Kohl's etc.. By 1909, Hazel Crest had a population of 1,500 people. In 1916, the town passed an ordinance requiring all businesses to have a sign that said "Hazel Crest is a White Town." In 1960, Hazel Crest became the first municipality in Illinois to adopt bilingual education laws.
