During this time period industry growth led to increased demands for land which necessitated new construction projects throughout downtown Harvey as well as along Randolph Road which bisected the cityscape north-south
The Harvey, Illinois settlement began on October 3, 1837 when traders John A. Harvey and James H. Surtain founded the town of Harvey on the Potawatomi River in what is now Putnam County, Illinois. The first post office was established in Harvey on November 6, 1837. On February 11, 1840, the population of Harvey was 350 people. In 1847, a school was built in Harvey and it remained in operation until 1923. In 1865, a church was built and it remains in use today. In 1893, the Harveys became members of the Episcopal Church and moved their community to Arlington Heights, Illinois where they remain today. The town of Harvey experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location at the confluence of several rivers and its easy access to transportation including trains from Chicago and Detroit. By 1850, there were over 1200 people living in Harvey with businesses such as stores, hotels and mills operating extensively throughout the town center.
