Hawthorne Telescopes, Inc., founded in Harvey, Illinois in 1922, manufactured and sold scopes to farmers and hunters throughout the Midwest. The company was acquired by Meade Instruments in 1978. In 2009, Meade Instruments merged with Leupold & Company to form Leupold & Associates. Harvey Telescope Museum opened on October 1, 2010 as part of the merger. The first scopes made by Hawthorne Telescopes were built for hunting game animals such as deer and bear. The company exported their products to many parts of the world including Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia and South America. Ultimately, what set Hawthorne Telescopes apart from other manufacturers was their innovative design which helped make them a classic brand in the optics industry today. One of the most famous telescopes that was produced by Hawthorne Telescopes was the Hawkeye Deluxe spotting scope which became popular among photographers and militaries during World War II. The telescope offered an advanced picture quality for its time and is still considered one of the best spotters available today. Harvey is a city in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mclean County. Harvey was founded on November 15, 1836 by James K. Polk and his brother John as a wagon town named Harveyville after George Harvey, an early settler in what is now McLean County. In 1838, the city boundaries were enlarged to incorporate all of present-day Mclean County. On May 1, 1840, Harvey became one of the towns in the original Springfield Township of Clark Township which was organized on December 12th of that year. The first post office was established in Harvey on January 2nd of that year under the name "Hardingville". On December 5th 1870 it was re-established as "Houston", with James A. Houston as its first Postmaster and until 1918 it continued to be so even though he died in 1901 prior to taking office. In 1878–79 there were two major fires which destroyed many homes and businesses in downtown Houston; one started when sparks from a locomotive caught fire while passing through the community and quickly spread; another began when an open barrel filled with nails ignited when being handled by local blacksmiths during repair work on their shop doorsteps (the barrels had been used for kindling for their forge). Despite these dangers and several other scares experienced during those years downtown Houston experienced some growth including new hotels/motels opened up such as The Riverside Hotel (now known as Renaissance Park) and The Continental Hotel (now known as Holiday Inn Express), two large grocery stores opened up Peoples Grocery & Meat Market (Now defunct) just east of downtown Houston between Sixth Street South and Seventh Street North then Circle K operated out of what is now called Rockhurst Mall before finally closing down around 1984 or 1985 due largely to competition from larger store chains like Safeway etc.; also added during this time were various new churches built such as First Baptist Church - now called Trinity United Methodist Church - built on land donated by J W Marriott who at that time also owned much of downtown Houston; Stonestreet Baptist Church - later become First Baptist Cathedral - located nearToday's I-10 freeway exit 71A northwest side street just south of today's intersection with US Highway 362 east side street which forms today's northwest corner lot for both churches; Finally additions during this time included a few small businesses catering mostly to dog owners like Mr Fuhrman's Dog Store built across from Lamarck Elementary School at what is now 610 N Second Ave., Mrs Emmons' Ladies Cleaning Service located across from Lamarck Elementary School at 611 S Second Ave., Drs Hickey & Whiteney's Dentist Practice building off Third Street SW between Second Avenue NW and Third Avenue NE inside present day Samford University limits northeast corner lot formerly used by Armour Drugstore whose business closed down around 1990 or 1991 due primarily to competition from larger drugstores etc.; The late 1800s saw continuing growth within DowntownHouston despite several major storms that struck various parts of Mclean County including yet another large fire burned down most notably McConnell’s grocery store along Main Street SE near current day I-10 exit 69B McLennan Boulevard just west side off Interstate 10 outside Samford University Limits southeast corner lot once occupied by Armour Drugstore whose business closed down around 1990 or 1991 due primarily to competition from larger drugstores etc.; In 1907 Texas Panhandle Railroad Company engineer W D Sprague designed a plan for Katy Railroad Company line extending northeasterly through Dwight Junction intoMcLennan Counties includingHouston providing water rights along right bank thereofand construction commenced adjacent theretoon July 24th 1908obtained consentof State legislatureand lines extended thenceAugust 3rd 1908to terminus at designated point near modern day Springdale
