Harvey, Illinois is a town in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Harvey is named after John Harvey, an early settler and landowner who donated to the town its current name. The first permanent settler in Harvey was Abram Deems who arrived in 1836. In 1839-1840, another group of settlers by the name of Fenton moved into what is now Harvey from Bedford Township in Cook County. They were among the first white men to set foot on what became Harvey Township. On November 7, 1840, Abram Deems sold his interest in the township to Henery Gardiner and others for $2 per acre (2 USD). In 1846-1847 Gouverneur Morris owned 640 acres (248 ha) of east side township lands that he donated to Harvey as part of his purchase from Abram Deems for $10 per acre (8 USD). This land comprised most of present day Macomb County and extended from about Kolb Road south to about Rosedale Road eastward including all or a portion of every current municipality excepting Orland Park and Elgin Heights; it also included much of what are today Elmwood Park and Oak Forest neighborhoods on Lake Michigan shoreline north of I-94 between La Grange Road and Harper Woods Boulevard. In 1865-1866 Major General James Biddle organized a McKnight Brigade under command Major General Winfield Scott which invaded Mexico during the American Civil War as part of General Rosecrans' Expedition against Mexico City; onOctober 25th McClernand's brigade attacked Mexican forces entrenched along Pico de Orizaba Creek Bridge near Monterrey while other brigades fought at Contreras River Bridge northeast entrance to Mexico City; both McClernand's brigade commanders were killed; total losses among McClellan's brigade officers numbered twenty two with one officer wounded –McClernand had been promoted lieutenant colonel posthumously rankings him captain general at death’s bed! The Harvey, Illinois History Museum is a non-profit, educational organization that preserves and promotes the history of Harvey, Illinois. The museum was founded in 1984 by local historian John Green and has grown to include more than 20,000 items from the community and surrounding area. Harvey was first settled in 1847 by German immigrants. By 1865, it had become the largest town in Scott County with a population of 1,500. It declined during the 1870s as new settlements were established around Chicago; however, by 1881 Harvey had regained its significance as a commercial center due to its location on the city's main north-south railroad line. In 1916 Harvey merged with neighboring towns of Newton and Mount Prospect to form the new municipality of Harvey-Newton. The town's decline continued during World War II; however, it bounced back after the war thanks to an influx of veterans who rebuilt businesses and increased grain production. The population reached 12,000 by 1970 but declined again following the Great Recession. Despite this decline, Harvey has remained an important cultural and economic center for southwestern Cook County since its incorporation in 1984. The Harvey Heritage Museum offers exhibits about local history (including agriculture, industry, transportation/logging/farming etc.), Artifacts from nearby Lake Michigan POW camps (1944-1945), photos from everyday life in early twentieth century America (via artifacts like hand crank telegraph machines), old school dances (1892 & 1907) as well as special events such as Pioneer Day on July 4th or harvest festivals (e.g., corn shows). There are also classes for children including American Indian art appreciation or blacksmithing demonstrations
