In 1893, Harvey became part of Cook County when that state was created from parts of Indiana and Michigan. During this time period, much progress was made within town limits including construction of several churches, a hospital (now known as Stritch University Hospital),and more importantly its becoming one of the most vibrant communities in central Illinois
Harvey was founded in 1836 by A.F. Harvey and his brother, James W. Harvey. The Harvey brothers were the first farmers in the area and they started a cotton gin in 1853. In 1865, their father, A.F.'s son, George Fenton Harvey bought the farm from them and it continued to be operated by the family until 1925 when it was sold to civil engineer Harry Hines.
