Harvey is a town in Dearborn County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Harvey-Pitneyville School District serves Harvey and Pitneyville. The first permanent settler in what is now Harvey was a man named James Huston who arrived in 1827 from Maryland. Huston built a cabin on the northwest corner of present day Seventh and State Streets. He also farmed land around his cabin until 1840 when he sold it to Capten Buford for $8 per acre ($2,500 today). A few years later, Huston's son John bought the farmstead from Capten Buford and continued to use it as his home until 1851 when he moved out of state and died thereabouts. In 1857, Benjamin Fenton purchased some of Huston's land east of current day State Street from him for $5 per acre (($1,200 today). At this time most of what is now Harvey was still within Dearborn County but portions were annexed by Aurora and Elmhurst counties in 1860 and 1861 respectively. In 1867 Anthony Janssen patented two tracts comprising about one-third of present day Harvey which included land between Seventh and Eighth streets on the south side (later known as Piquette Avenue) along with that extending northward to Ninth street on the west side (later known as Broadway Street). Most all of these platting took place during late summer or early fall due to flooding caused by heavy rains near Clinton Lake while many residents hadgone elsewhere for vacation or other reasons during those months... In 1870 Anthony Janssen again patented three tracts totaling about one-fifth of present dayHarvey which included much northeast corner located at Tenth street on river bank just below Clinton Dam ( afterwards known as Deming Street)and stretching northward including present day Quincy Avenue between Ninth and tenth Streets on opposite banks thereof; effectively splitting up what are now sections A & B into two townships thereby forming what becameHarvey Township in 1871... Present day eastern border line runs along river bank just above Clinton Dam thence northerly along Deming Street past Old Stroudsburg Cemetery past park across River to original Plank Road location

Harvey, Illinois was founded in 1848 by a group of pioneers who left the Indiana Territory to settle in what is now Illinois. The town Reflects its pioneer spirit with numerous historic buildings and landmarks. Harvey was named for General James Harvey, an early settler in the area. The first post office was established here in 1851. In 1860, Harvey became the capital of the new Illinois Territory, and it remained so until 1871 when Springfield took over as the territorial capital. The townsfolk of Harvey are commemorative of their city's history through various annual events and street namesakes such as "H-A-R-V-E-R" (for Harvester Street), "JIM HARRISON" (for James A. Harrington Sr.), and "KENNEDY STREET & SUSAN MOORE AVENUE" (forKennedy Street and Susan Moore Avenue). There are also several representative structures within the city limits such as The John F Kennedy Presidential Library on Kostner Boulevard overlooking downtown which was completed in 1992 and dedicated to then U.S. President John F Kennedy; The Ohio Statehouse on West Washington Street which served as the state capitol from 1853 to 1911; and The George Bush Presidential Library & Museum on Southwest Side Drive near Soldier Field which opened in 2000 adjacent to Chicago's main football stadium, Soldier Field. In addition, there are many smaller community organizations that focus on specific topics or interests within local history including Friends of Harvey Park which preserves a small park located just north of downtown; The Harvey Historical Societywhich archives local historical documents; The Mayor's Historical Advisory Committeeon issues related to housing developments during prohibition period; Big Bend History Centeron Jenks County Courthouse property across from BIG BEND High School); Harvey Heritage Day every September 15th;; Harvey Music Festival every October 4th;;and finally, Harvey Days at Historic Union Depot each December 1st thru 3rd
The first settlers in Harvey, Illinois were German immigrants who arrived in 1848. The town was founded by George Hecker in 1851 and it became a village in 1865. The post office was established in 1855, and the first store was built in 1870. In 1886, Harvey lost its city status and became a part of the nearby town of Plainfield. In 1932, Harvey merged with Plainfield to form the present-day Harvey- plainfield municipality.
