Gun targets have been a part of Harvey, Illinois for many years. The first target was created in 1868 by S.M. Brown and it became known as the “Brown rifle target”. It was located on the northwest corner of Second and McGowan Streets. The target remained in place until 1919 when it was moved to Third Street and disappeared from view. In 1935, the “Heinrich Heine” Target Shop opened up at Fourth and McGowan Streets and continued to use the Brown rifle target until 1951 when it changed hands and became known as the “Heinrich Heine Target Range”. The range continued in operation until 1984 when it closed down due to lack of funding. In 1975, a new target called the “Hollywood Star” was created by Lenny Funke at Tenth Street & Hanna Avenue. It remained in place until 1978 when it was moved to Ninth Street & First Avenue where it currently remains today. The Hollywood Star is one of Harvey’s most popular targets because its design is unique compared to other targets available on the market. Its large size allows users to hit multiple shots without having to worry about hitting too many individual pellets at once. The Hollywood Star has been vandalism prone over the years but recent renovations have made it more resistant to damage than ever before!

The city government changed its name to Harvey on July 1, 1911 due to Executive Order No. 9362 which called for the reestablishment of municipal governments within designated areas in Illinois with no more than three towns having police departments. From 1921 through 1928, Harvey had its own mayor and City Council who were responsible for all day-to-day operations of the municipality as well as providing financial resources for programs such as street lighting and public works projects. With the exception of World War II which led to depleted coffers, Harvey has been an thriving community with strong economic growth throughout its history

By 1960, however, Harvey had lost much of its popularity due to increasing suburbanization and economic decline. However, during the late 1990s and early 2000s efforts were made to revive the town with investment from groups such as The Illinois Foundation for Parks and Recreation and The Friends ofHarvey Park. Today, Harvey is an attractive destination for tourists thanks to its rich history and wide variety of cultural experiences available.
