The Harvey Rifle Company was founded in 1892 by Hiram Harvey and his brother, James. The company made rifles and shotguns, as well as parts for other firearms. In 1916, the company merged with the Springfield Armory to form the Springfield Armory/Harvey Arms Company.
Harvey is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located on the southern edge of the city. Harvey was named for General James Harvey who led American forces against Native Americans in 1763. The first settlers in what is now Harvey were three families from Connecticut who arrived in 1810. They built a log cabin on State Street and started to grow corn, beans, and potatoes. The town's first school was built in 1814 by subscription with $2 per pupil. By 1830, there were five schools in Harvey; one each for white children and Indian children. In 1835, two brothers built a sawmill on the stream that flows through town. This mill became Harvey's primary industry until it closed around 1970s although some remain standing today as Vintage Mills Suite A-6 & 7 (HVAC). In 1846 Caldwell Jenson platted what would become present day Harvey Township on land that he had purchased from William Huffman of Des Plaines Township west of where modern-day Irving Park lies today. By 1850, about 50 people lived in Harvey; all farmers with some livestock or crop production also involved. The first post office opened at this location on November 5th, 1850 as "Caldwell". In 1870 it changed its name to "Harvey" after General James Hargrave Harvey who fought against Native Americans during the American Revolution and later served as Mayor of Chicago

One of the earliest handguns was created in China over 2,500 years ago. The gun was known as a ‘shi’ or ‘shotgun’ and it consisted of a short barrel with a single shot chamber that could be fired with either hand. It was very similar to the shotgun we know today, but it had no power source other than the motion of your arm. The first handguns were not mass-produced until after World War II when Repeating Arms Company began producing pistols for American soldiers in Europe. The guns were built using traditional methods such as forging metal from cannonballs and casting iron frames from steel wires. This gave these pistols their distinctive look and feel – they were often called ‘gunslinger’ pistols because they were designed for use by cowboy gunmen who preferred to shoot from Horseback rather than from cover. In 1925, Browning started producing handguns under the name Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR). These guns differed primarily in their design – BARs had an overall length of just over 6 inches, while most other handguns had lengths between 4¼ and 5 inches. The BAR was used extensively during World War II before being replaced by the M1 Garand Carbine in 1945.
