Harvey, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. Harvey is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was named for General James K. Polk and his family who settled there in 1847. The post office was founded in 1855, and the first store opened in 1858. A cotton gin was built in 1886, and a sawmill on the river soon followed. In 1912 Harvey had a schoolhouse and two churches; the present-day Harvey Methodist Church was built that year. In 1924 Harvey became home to what is now known as "The Great Chicago Fire." That night more than 100 homes were destroyed or damaged by flames that began near the high school and quickly spread to other neighborhoods around town. More than $1 million (2008 dollars) was raised to help rebuild those affected by that disaster within days of its occurrence; today it remains one of McLean County's most famous memories. After years of decline due to factors such as population loss, farming consolidation, environmental degradation, and economic revitalization beginning in the late 1990s, Harvey has experienced recent revival with investment from both private individuals and government entities including: a new Walmart Supercenter which opened in 2009; an expansion of Bradley University which added undergraduate degrees in business administration & marketing; a major renovation of Panther Pkwy., which includes new businesses and housing developments; and plans for an airport redevelopment project which are expected to create 1,000 jobs over 10 years when completed

Harvey, Illinois was founded in 1847 by Captain James Harvey and his men from the ship "Plymouth". The town was named for Harvey's birthplace, Plymouth, England. The first post office in Harvey was opened in 1851. In 1870, a sawmill and gristmill were built in the community. The first oil well was drilled in Harvey in 1909. In 2010, the Community Foundation of Harvey honored Captain James Harvey with its inaugural Distinguished Citizen Award. In 2013, the City of Harvey dedicated a park to Capt. James Harvey at Ninth and State Streets. In 2017, recognized as one of America's "100 Best Small Towns", Mayor Matt Hogan announced that he would be seeking another term as Mayor of Harvey through November 3rd 2020 and will continue to work hard to ensure that all residents have access to quality public services while preserving downtown retail and cultural opportunities

The town had a population of only around 400 people when it post office opened on December 17, 1854. By 1870, the population had decreased to just ninety people and by 1890 it had dwindled to just six people. In 1951, Harvey merged with neighboring towns of Chicago and Rockford to create an additional small community called Harvey-Chicago-Rockford which still exists today.
