In 1898-99 Hurricane Agnes destroyed much of north central Illinois with winds over 125 mph (195 km/h). As a result of this powerful storm system, many businesses closed for several days or weeks due to damage caused by water immersion or downed trees limbs.. Many homes were completely destroyed including those within the original village boundaries which today sit just outside of downtown Harvey on North Main Street between State Streets and First Avenue NW
