Harvey is a small town in Illinois, United States. The population was 7,980 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Harvey was founded in 1871 by George A. Cushing and named for him. Harvey is located on the south side of Chicago, about 15 miles (24 km) east of the city's downtown core and 25 miles (40 km) west of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus. The Cushing family had many holdings in Harvey, including a large tobacco plantation and several agricultural businesses. In 1892, George A.Cushing donated land to build what would become Union Pacific Railroad's Harvey station, which served as a major stop on its route between Chicago and Nauvoo, Iowa. The railroad soon became one of town's most important employers and contributed financially to its growth over the years; by 1920 it employed more than 100 people in Harvey alone. In recent decades, local businesses have grown increasingly reliant on online sales models such as eBay and Amazon; while some traditional retail outlets remain open such as a independent grocery store, other storefronts have closed or been converted into apartments or office space. In addition to its reliance upon online commerce,Harvey has also become known for its wide variety of outdoor activities including fishing*, golfing* (*the community hosts two annual golf tournaments), skating*, basketball *(the town hosts an annual summer basketball game featuring top high school players from both Illinois and Wisconsin), horseback riding*, skiing** (*a few residents commute to nearby Summit County for winter recreation*)and snowmobiling*** (*an occasional activity when skies are clear). As with most small towns in America., Harvey has experienced some growth and decline since 2000; however* despite this volatility* overall economic conditions have remained relatively stable over that time period*. Recently*, however, local officials have begun emphasizing development near central business districts in order to draw increased job opportunities within walking distance of homes; these efforts may be successful given that employment rates within walking distance continue to rise***.*

Harvey was founded in 1836 by James Harvey and his wife, Anna. The Harvey family owned the original land that is now Harvey. The town name is derived from the old Dutch word hart, meaning heart or soul. In 1868, James Harvey donated 5 acres of land to the town for a public square. In 1906, Harvey was named one of the "100 Greatest American Towns" by Reader's Digest magazine. In 1881, a post office was established in Harvey with the name of Centralia. Centralia changed its name to Harvey in 1902 after James A. Harrington became Mayor of Centralia and contributed $5,000 to improve local infrastructure including a new courthouse and jail. In 1908-09, centralia built two high school buildings on what is now Irving Park Road which became home to many successful businesses including Emanuel Ruppert Printing Company and Jansen's Grocery until it closed in 1982 when it moved to Highwood. After World War II ended with Victory over Japan in 1945, anti-war sentiment increased throughout America as memories of Japanese Internment camps filled many people's minds and hearts. As a result of this feeling of distrust towards all newcomers during this time period (the postwar era), many small towns around the country decided to rename themselves after specific wars or other significant moments in American history instead of adopting their current namesakes - such as Centralia (1902), Hiroshima (1945), or Whitney Houston (1986). James A. Harrington Jr., who had been mayor since 1908-09 and also served as president pro tempore of the Illinois Senate from 1951-55, donated $10 million dollars towards developing downtown Harvey into an economic center for the citywide area around it through various grants and donations from his private foundation called The Harrington Foundation which he cofounded with his wife Anna in 1956; it continues today as The Anna & James A. Harrington Foundation Incorporated located within Chicago suburb Elgin just north of downtown Chicago off I-95! This grant program helped bring about major changes not only to downtown but also surrounding neighborhoods such as Irving Park Road where big box stores like Sears were opened up while small mom & pop shops continued to go outof business; furthermore these stores created jobs both inside and outside city limits! When John Lennon came visitin' Chicago in 1965 he made some famous comments about 'The Worst Town on Earth' being right next door ta him at Wrigley Field – Downtown Harry!! It would be another 25 years beforeElgin would host its own world renowned rock stars event dubbed beanbag tourney weekend hosted by Paul Revere & His Raiders…..
Harvey was founded in 1847 by John Harvey and his family. The townspeople of Harvey elected a post office in 1852, and the first store opened on September 12th of that year. In 1865, the town was named for General Ulysses S. Grant after he visited the area while on his way to visit Vandalia, Indiana.
