Harvey also played an important role in Illinois politics during the late 1800s and early 1900s; because it was located so close to Chicago and Springfield, both political bodies paid great attention to the town. This led to some interesting interactions between local citizens and politicians: at one point during Reconstruction, a group of men waited outside Mayor James Weldon Johnson’s office while he debated with his opponent over how best to spend government money (the men later received indictments). Despite these challenges and successes galore – including becoming a city in 1925 – Harvey never achieved quite the level of prominence enjoyed by other towns within Cook County (the current county seat). However, despite its relatively small population size (just over 1 thousand as of 2017), it remains an active community that takes pride in its history and culture

The Village of Harvey celebrated its centennial on July 4th, 2019 with events including an outdoor concert headlined by country music artist Jason Aldean and local officials conducted by Mayor Donny Patey.
On November 8, 1871, Harvey was organized as a town in Kane County. On December 1, 1872, the post office was established in Harvey and it remained in operation until it closed on October 25, 1932. The first school opened in Harvey on September 15, 1876 and it remained open until it closed on May 3, 1948.
