The Harvey, Illinois Ammunition Company was founded in 1892 by Frank A. Haggerty and John J. McNamara. The company produced ammunition for the muzzleloader, shotgun, rifle and pistol calibers. It also manufactured reloading supplies. In 1899 the company moved from its original location on James Street to a new building at 8th and Maple Streets in Harvey. In 1907 the Harvey, Illinois Ammunition Company merged with the Chicago Armoury Company to form the Chicago-Patriots Arms Manufacturing Corporation. The armory continued to produce ammunition under this name until it closed in 1959.
Harvey is a small town in Illinois, located about thirty-five miles east of Chicago. The population was 7,692 at the 2010 census. Harvey is one of four townships in Cook County and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1853 by General John Harvey as a station on the main line between Cairo, Illinois and Quincy, Illinois. It was named for John Harvey, an early settler and namesake of the village that now serves as its centerpiece. By 1870, Harveys had developed into a large community with over 1,000 residents. In 1881, it became a city under the name of Harvey City. However, by 1902 it reverted to its original name and remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became part of the new Town of Harvey within Cook County. The first post office in Harvey opened on July 10th, 1853; it was discontinued on December 2nd due to high demand from settlers who had been drawn to the site by its potential for agriculture or lumber production (the first loggers arrived in 1856). The first store opened there on October 12th 1865 by Chauncy Bemis & Co.; it closed after only six months because of competition from other stores opening in nearby towns (the opening date given may be incorrect). In 1907–08 local school superintendent Wm Halsey designed and built what is today known as "Harvey High School" on a tract adjacent to present-day State Street just north of downtown; this school served grades 9 through 12 until 1984 when they were replaced by Loyola Academy which currently serves grades 9 through 12 (LHS also houses Harry S Truman Presidential Library and Museum). According to the 2000 census, there were 6% African American residents living among non-Hispanic whites; however this number increased to 11% by 2002 due primarily to migration from South Side neighborhoods such as West Side Park and Englewood which had become majority black following racially motivated riots during The Great Chicago Fire Of 1896 (see Black Hawk War: Timeline ). There has also been recent influxes from Mexico) since then but these percentages remain relatively low given that most people who identify themselves as black live near white populations or are descended from slaveowners/enslaved Africans. As recently as 2000 – less than 10 years ago – about 60% percent (of all births reported) occurred within 5 miles radius of where they lived according to US Census data ().
