Hanover Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was organized as a separate municipality on April 15, 1868. The first settlers in Hanover Park were farmers who came to the area from New England in the mid-18th century. By 1836, nearly all of the original residents had left for other parts of Illinois because of low wheat yields and an infestation of bumblebees that caused great damage to crops. A group of ten men and boys from Lancaster, Pennsylvania arrived in 1837 and planted a cornfield that became one of Hanover Park's most famous landmarks. A mill built by John Clements in 1840 began operating as one of the earliest mills in Cook County. The mill closed in 1865 but reopened as a grocery store in 1886 under ownership by Samuel Hargrave and his son-in-law George Latham Sr.. A post office was opened at Hanover Park on July 1, 1868, and remained open until it was discontinued on November 15th, 1969 due to consolidation with neighboring Glen Ellyn into the new Township of Glenview. The first school building was erected on what is now Washington Street just east of present day Elmira Road (then Elmira Road West). Classes were held for two years before being moved to larger buildings located on First Avenue between Lawrence Avenue and Harlem Boulevard until they were moved again to their present site within Hanover Park limits when enrollment swelled to over 350 students by 1922; this structure served as both schools and town hall until its replacement by an annexe/central library (now called Prairie View A&M University) which opened its doors August 16th, 1934 In 1909 – 1913 Alice Morse conducted experiments at her home involving gas lamps which she named "atomic lights" after her friend Fermi – these tests led to approval for electrical generation from spark plugs which are still used today

The first site to be erected on the property was a small log cabin which served as the home for Captain John Smith and his family during their stay in the area. Later on, a gristmill was built which began production in 1850. Additionally, two churches were constructed on the property – one being called simply “Church’s Hill” and another being called “Straits Church” after its location near Straits Street. It should be noted that at this time, Straits Street only ran east-west and did not exist as an actual street name until much later in history. One of the most important events taking place withinHanover Park occurred during World War II when it became known as “Hankow Island” due to its proximity to German Naval Base Hamburg (then just Hamburg). This event has been referred to as one of the most significant moments in American history because it helped solidify international relations between our country and Germany while also helping support war efforts throughout Europe. Additionally, many famous Americans who lived or operated near Hanover Park during this time include President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Vice President Harry Truman, Secretary of State George C Marshall, Admiral Chester Nimitz, etc.. Since its inception, Hanover Park has undergone various changes both physically and culturally including becoming an elementary school district in 1954; becoming an independent city located within Cook County in 1998; undergoing multiple annexation into other municipalities over time such as Elmhurst (1975), Arlington Heights (1991), Northbrook (2003) and finally being annexed into Chicago back again in 2010! In total, these changes have resulted in Hanover Park having something that truly speaks to its namesake – a parkland full of beauty and history which can be enjoyed by anyone who visits!
