In 1851, Josephine de la Rose founded the first store in Hanover Park. She opened a general store and post office on the corner of First Street and Spring Street. The store was known as the "De La Rose Store." In 1864, Mrs. De LaRose sold her business to H.H. Bechtel and his son John A. Bechtel Jr., who renamed it the Bechtel Company. The company operated until 1971 when it merged with United States Steel Corporation to form United States Steel Corporation/United Steelworkers (USC). The De La Rose Store was also where Abraham Lincoln purchased his copy of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar from Mr. De LaRose in 1854 for $8 ($140 today). In 1865, USC began construction of its first plant in Hanover Park, which became known as the "USC Factory." The factory produced munitions for the Union army during the American Civil War. It continued production until 1984 when it was closed down due to economic problems. In 1937, USC erected a monument to its fallen soldiers at Memorial Hall in Hanover Park honoring all those killed or wounded during World War II. Today, USC operates several businesses including: a retail store called "The merchants" on First Street; a restaurant called "The Star" on Second Street; an engineering center on Third Avenue; and various research institutes and laboratories across Illinois campuses including: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Northwestern University; Purdue University; Illinois State University; Southern Illinois University Carbondale; and Northern Illinois University Edwardsville

Hanover Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 80,622 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Hanover Park was founded in 1847 as a small village on the east side of Chicago by German immigrants. The city of Chicago annexed Hanover Park in 1868, and the village gradually lost its autonomy until it merged with Chicago in 1984. The first settler in what is now Hanover Park was John Bechtold who arrived from Germany in 1811. He built a log cabin on the site which still stands today. Bechtold's cabin became an important stopping point for early settlers because it had good water and electricity connections and offer easy access to markets for goods brought overland from Illinois by horse and wagon. In 1847, George Nesselrode purchased land adjacent to Bechtold's cabin for $8 per acre (worth about $ ). Nesselrode constructed a small white frame house on his property which he named "Nesselrodt". In 1850, he added another house to his property which became known as "Netherlands", after George Nesselrode's father-in-law, Cornelius Nethersole (1792–1866). Nethersole served as mayor of Chicago from 1865 to 1865 and again from 1870 to 1875; he also owned various businesses within City Hall complex including several breweries along State Street near Wacker Drive. In 1870, John Prentice bought Nethersole's house and added three more stories to it – becoming one of the most prominent streets within City Hall complex. By 1860, all but two out of eight buildings on Dutch Avenue were occupied by citizens or their families living cheek by jowl with Government officials during downtown business hours: government officers conducted business at home rather than inside Government buildings where private citizens could not approach them without fear of being arrested or prosecuted; this situation changed when City Hall Complex was completed and officialBusiness occurred elsewhere within its walls insteadinsideGovernment Buildings . In 1861 Charles Dearborn acquired 322 acres (12 km²) northeast of Dutch Ave., bounded by present day Ravenswood Rd., West Side Ave., Oak Lawn Rd., and Armour Drs., forming part of what is now North Center Hts..Dearborn subdivided his land into blocks - each block owning one acre (.25 ha) - creating four townships: German Township (northwest boundary), Polish Township (southwest boundary), Italian Township (east boundary), Polish Township (west boundary). Dearborn renamed each township after existing neighborhoods within their boundaries: Maple Leaf Township-(northwest boundary), Lincolnshire Township-(southwest Boundary), Desplaines Township-(eastBoundary), Winnetka Township-(west Boundary). Each township held elections every three years using open voting laws passed by Congress resolution ratified at that time; these laws prevented closed society groups like religious organizations or political parties from dominating township elections while allowing individual voters to join any number of such organizations if they pleased . Prior to becoming president, Truman worked for General Motors as its vicepresident for research and development from 1945 to 1947 and helped found GM Chase National Bank (later renamed Citigroup).
