Hanover Park is a small town in the Northwest Side of Chicago, on the border of Cook County and Kane County. The population was 20,811 at the 2010 census. It has been called "The Jewel of the North Side." Hanover Park was founded in 1855 as a sawmill town by German immigrants. The name came from nearby Hannelore Hanover, who had married John Daley, an Illinois legislator. The first residents were farmers and their families who established homes around what is now Main Street and Westcott Avenue. A post office was opened in 1857, and by 1865 there were over 100 residents. In 1870 local developer James Waddell purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land east of present-day Harrison Road for $25 per acre (1 hectare). He named it Hanover Park after his mother's birthplace in Germany—Hannover Cathedral being located just to the northwest. A grist mill and sawmill were built on this site within two years of each other; both became operational in 1872. A railroad arrived in 1870 but did not become operative until 1876 when it linked with the Chicago & Alton Railroad near Fulton Landing to provide transportation for goods coming upriver from Lake Michigan during the great flood days of that year. Hanover Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by Lake Shore Drive to the south and east, Irving Park to the north and west, and from 15th Street to the northwest it borders Kimball Township. The town was laid out in 1836 as a result of land grants from King George IV of Great Britain. After Illinois became a state in 1837, Hanover Park became one of its first towns. The first white settler arrived in 1838 and built a cabin on what is now State Road 30W. In 1840, John Cockerill established an inn called Cockerill's House which served as the nucleus for what would become Hanover Park Center today. In 1850, Isaac Griggs bought 4 acres (16 ha) near modern-day Elmhurst Avenue and organized a parish church there with his brother Elias Griggs as pastor. That same year saw the opening of one of Chicago's earliest grocery stores by Jno Burchfield located at 41st & Michigan Avenue – later known as Grocery Row – which remains an important commercial landmark to this day. Other early businesses included Wm Hutton's tavern on State Road 2 (present day Cicero Ave.) across from what is now Stuyvesant High School; Elisha Stevens' bakery on Elmhurst Ave.; Gopher Coal & Coke Company Store opened in 1857; Abraham Lincoln's alibi for April 14 1865 can be traced back to this store too when he purchased coal here for his campaign wagon."
Hanover Park, Illinois was first settled in 1847. It became a village in 1871 and again in 1919. The village had a total population of 901 in 1950.
