Hanover Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Hanover Park was organized on April 17, 1837 by surveyors of the newly created county of Cook. The first postmaster was John Hickey and the first settler was James Bailyn. The first store in Hanover Park opened in 1838. A millinery business soon followed and a cotton gin followed in 1840. In 1845, a school opened and operated until 1886 when it became an elementary school with Marymount College as its second provider of education. A new courthouse and jail were built in 1908-09 to replace an old building that had been destroyed by fire two years earlier. The original courthouse still stands today and is used as a public library during normal hours while the jail has been converted into residential use since 2006-07 when it became known as "The John Adams". In 1916, then Mayor Edward Daley granted land to be developed for commuter transportation in what would become Lincoln Park; Hanover Park received its first bus line on October 9th that year from South Side Bus Company (now Metra). Hanover Park's main shopping center opened on May 5th,1963 with JCPenney being one of the initial tenants along with Sears Roebuck & Co., Kress Optical Inc., Gimbels Bakery Corporation, Burger King Corporation and Bel Air Emporium (later Bel Air Outfitters) among others before eventually closing down in 1984 after over 20 years operation.
